New City Reader, conceived by Joseph Grima and Kazys Varnelis, is a newspaper featuring articles on the city, architecture and public, first published within the scope of The Last Newspaper which was exhibited in 2011 at the New Museum for Contemporary Art, New York. The publication was created to be posted in public for collective reading with inspiration from similar practices in the nineteenth century. Each issue is guest-edited by a group of architects, theoreticians and scholars, who are experts in various fields.
Joseph Grima, who is also the co-curator of the 1st Istanbul Design Biennial, carried the idea to Istanbul, and the New City Reader was herewith published by Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) on October 2012, before the opening of the biennial.
