Design Walks

The Design Walks, which encompass design-oriented offices, shops, ateliers, manufacturers’, and buildings,are even richer this year with the addition of thematic walks that focuses on various areas that bear authentic textures. With a view to getting insight into different disciplines and phases of design, the Design Walks programme, starting in October, take visitors to 12 areas on both sides of the city, in cooperation with the writer of the book “Exceptional Istanbul: Book of Small Shops”, IlgınYorulmaz.

The “Thematic Walks“ were planned in cooperation with the Design Workshop Kadıköy (TAK) and some of Istanbul’s leading designers, architects, academicians, and cultural institutions.

Galata - Şişhane Design Walk
Tour Dates: 17 October, 7 November, 22 November, 6 December, 12 December
Starts from in front of the İKSV Design Shop at 11:00

A tour in the Tophane-Galata walk, whose streets lined with authentic shopsbeam with bohemian chicness, takes us to special venues such as art and exhibition spaces, log designers’, and jewellery designers’.

Moda Design Walk
Tour Dates: 17 October, 8 November, 21 November, 13 December
Starts from the old Moda Ferry Quay at 11:00

Moda, the trendy neighbourhood aspiring to be the Karaköy of the Asian side, is kept vibrant 24/7 by the young generation. We listen to these youngsters at their studios to find out what they have been doing in design and arts. We also make a point of stopping by the most genuine chocolate store in the all of Istanbul.

Fener - Balat Design Walk
Tour Dates: 18 October, 1 November, 8 November, 15 November, 29 November, 13 December
Starts from in front of the Rezan Has Museum at 11:00

Home to the Patriarchate, alongside a church and a mosque, Fener-Balat is a cultural mosaic, typical of Istanbul. This is a tour reminiscent of the past with those glassmakers, ceramic ateliers, and shoe designers that are gathered around a dervish coffeehouse, which only adds to the spiritual atmosphere of the neighbourhood.

Kuzguncuk Design Walk
Tour Dates: 24 October, 7 November, 14 November, 28 November, 5 December, 12 December
Starts from the Kuzguncuk Ferry Quay at 11:00

Kuzguncuk, where mosques and churches stand back to back and different beliefs exist in harmony, is one of the few districts that has preserved its neighbourhood atmosphere in Istanbul, thanks tothe residents who include architects, artists, and photographers. We take the multidimensional creative incubator, Simotas Building as our epicentre and chat with jewellery designers, chefs, aroma-therapists, and sculptors.

Beyoğlu - Galatasaray - Cihangir Design Walk
Tour Dates: 25 October, 1 November, 15 November, 21 November, 5 December
Starts from in front of the Akbank (Akarsu Ave. No.53) in Cihangir Square at 11:00

If you wondered where the most decent neighbourhood in Istanbul was in the old times, you would have to turn to Beyoğlu.This tour takes us through a modern-day panorama of this exceptional neighbourhood that harbours creative venues such as antiquaries, art galleries, designers’, and fashion houses nowadays.

Column of Constantine - Grand Bazaar - Sultanahmet Design Walk
Tour Dates: 25 October, 14 November, 22 November, 28 November, 12 December
Starts from the Istanbul Great Palace Mosaic Museum at 11:00

In the eight millenniums old Historical Peninsula, there lives occupations of at least a century old.This walk takes us tocarpet shops, silversmiths, shoemakers, coppersmiths, and many other designers of the old and new days.

THEMATIC WALKS

Kadıköy Font Walk
Executors: Assoc. Can Güvenir, Emrah Özturan, Koray Gelmez, Gülname Turan
Tour Dates: 1 November, 22 November
Starts from the Haydarpaşa Railway Station at 10:00 and lasts 3 hours

Letters, inscriptions, icons, and symbols are an indispensable part of urban communication that usually go unnoticed by our consciousness. These structures of typographic elements not only inform and instruct, but also give important clues as to the history and identity of the city.

This walk aims for Kadıköy to be recognized in terms of fonts. This project follows the name placards on buildings, signboards, and plaques, which are designed for providing information in daily life, to analyse and interpret the visual elements of the neighbourhood along a certain walk.

Design Palaces Walking Tour

Starts from the Romanian Cultural Institute / Addres: Siraselviler Cad., nr. 21, Taksim, Beyoglu Istanbul, Turkey

During Istanbul Design Week, EUNIC Turkey, the network of the cultural institutes and consulates of the European countries in Turkey, is organizing a walking tour to some of the palaces of its member states. The visitors will receive information regarding the history of the buildings, the cultural programmess of the institutes/consulates and their activities during the Istanbul Design Biennial and Istanbul Design Week. The participants will visit The Consulate General of Sweden, The Consulate General of Greece - Sismanoglio Megaro building, The Italian Institute for Culture, Goethe Institute Istanbul, The Adam Mickiewicz Museum and The Romanian Cultural Institute 'Dimitrie Cantemir' Istanbul.

Kadıköy Sound Walk

Starts from the Eminönü-Karaköy Ferry Quay in Kadıköy at 10:00 and lasts 1 hour

With all those sounds from sources like florists, opera and classical music lessons at the conservatory, kiosks, ferries and their passengers, smart tickets, calls-to-prayer, trams, seagulls, traffic, and the sea,along with the sounds from the built-up environment, Kadıköy Square is an urban public space as much rich as chaotic in soundmarks. These are all examinedto reveal theuser’s relation with these sounds, their perception of the sounds and space.  The spaces are conducted in a different perception method to experience a different reading.

Odour Design Walk

Walk I: Gedikpaşa Shoe Manufacturers
Tour Date: 15 November
Starts from the Çemberlitaş Turkish Bath at 10:00
Prerequisite: Please do not wear any fragrances or fragrant cosmetics to the tour.

This walk has a very special profile regarding odours. Providing a different sensuous experience along each street, it follows the commercial and daily life in Istanbulin the trail of odours.

Walk II: From Kadıköy to Moda
Tour Date: 13 December
Starts from the Karaköy-Eminönü Ferry Quay in Kadıköy at 10:00
Prerequisite: Please do not wear any fragrances or fragrant cosmetics to the tour.

This walk explores Kadıköy - or Khalkedonya, as it was once called - for its odours, which would otherwise go unnoticed as we walked down the streets any other day.

2014 Maslak: Liminal Archi-Walk

Tour Date: 15 November and 6 December
Starts from Galata Greek Primary School at 10.00

The experience of Maslak as an urban zone presents an opportunity to understand 21st century dystopic urbanism first hand. Through the device of a dérive, a psychogeographic walk, designer Ali Bakova and architecture critic/theorist Gökhan Karakuş, will guide visitors through the reality that is Maslak today. The symbolic nature of design in the architecture and urbanism found there as a part of this walk will open insights into the personal and social dynamics of Istanbul as a landscape of experience.

Kadıköy Tree Walk

Starts from: Tasarım Atölyesi Kadıköy (TAK) / Adres: Rasimpaşa Mah. Duatepe Sok. No: 61 Yeldeğirmeni Kadıköy, İstanbul, 10.00

The trees have begun to suffer in Istanbul where concepts of construction, demolition, excavation, and debris are frequently encountered. Trees that unquestionably contribute to urban dwellers are in need of intellectual – objective and technical conservation efforts while some of them still survive in some parts of Istanbul. Many streets in the coastal parts of Kadıköy provide natural walking-tracks to trace uninventoried trees. The route describes the street trees of Kadıköy where the trees in parks and gardens and ancient trees are only inventoried. Kadıköy Tree Walk aims to highlight the presence of trees ideally describing the togetherness of the city and the nature.
